Glamorgan Farmers tee off at the ‘home of golf

By GEM Community Correspondent in Golf

Cottrell Park Golf Club now firmly established as the Principality’s home of golf hosted the monthly meting of the Glamorgan Farmers’ Golf Society last Thursday when 34 members had the privilege of competing for the many prizes supplied by generous sponsor Mr Gino Cocco of Llanharan Concrete Co Ltd.

Despite a bitingly cold wind all but three of those who started completed their round on the extremely well prepared Button course.

Those that finished were full of praise for the condition of the ‘greens’ and credit for this must go to Dan Jarvis and Paul Morgan who work tirelessly in producing a golf course that really was in excellent condition.

When all competitors returned to the clubhouse to join early leavers Godfrey Lewis, Bryan Wadham and Trevor Wooding it soon became apparent that a close result would ensue with just four points separating the top five finishers.

A final score of 31 stableford points for David Williams and John Caines was soon bettered by Clive Edwards who finished in third place with 32 points.

Runner-up with 33 points was Martyn Edwards who managed once again to claw defeat from the jaws of victory when failing to score on the 307-yard stroke index four 17th hole.

Playing partner Clive Thomas, claiming a generous handicap of 22, took full advantage of this collecting four points on this same hole to move into pole position.

Clive and Martyn both bogeyed the closing 18th hole leaving Llantwit Major farmer Clive to claim victory with 35 points and collect the Llanharan Concrete Co Ltd silver rose bowl.

Nearest the pin on the Watts & Morgan sponsored par-3 holes were Clive Edwards, guest Bob Bishop and also 84 year old Aubrey Bowen, the recently ‘retired’ lumberjack from Penmark after a quiet word in his ear from Mrs Bowen!

Overall winner Clive Thomas won the Bear Hotel Cowbridge sponsored longest drive competition and Aubrey Thomas, despite a screw top bottle, managed to return home with a full bottle of whiskey provided by sponsors Premier Turf Ltd.

Aubrey correctly guessed 38 balls would remain out on this wonderful part of God’s country that raised £100 for the Noah’s Ark Appeal Fund.

Members are now looking forward to the annual Presentation Dinner & Dance scheduled for Friday 17th February at The Bear Hotel Cowbridge with tickets available from Ray Simkiss, telephone 01446 774542.
