Tondu demolish Penlan

By GEM Community Correspondent in Rugby

Tondu RFC cemented their place at the top of Division 2 Central West with an emphatic seven try demolition of Penlan at Pandy Park.

It only took three minutes for left wing Matthew Murphy to score the games first try with a wonderful finish, Josh Tatchell added the extra points.

A penalty from outside half Paul Spawart reduced the deficit for the visitors before Tondu captain Hywel Davies smashed his way over from a well controlled lineout, with Tatchell again adding the conversion.

Some great work from the backs then sent right wing Aled R Jones over to make the half time score 19-3 to the home side.

The second half began with a 30 metre drive from prop Scott Walters from a driving maul; Tatchell was on target again with the conversion to give Tondu a 26-3 advantage.

At this point the home side seemed to be scoring at will and another lineout on the 5 mete line saw flanker Matthew Morgan get the ball down.

The final 20 minutes saw a flurry of yellow cards on both sides which somewhat spoilt this game, but a great run from captain Kurt Velardo brought Penlan’s first try.

Aled Jones then scored a marvellous try for Tondu, converted by Tatchell. Velardo score his second towards the end with Stawart adding the conversion, but there was no stopping Matthew Murphy who sailed over for Tondu’s seventh try in injury time to seal another important win for the league leaders.

Team manager Rob Dyke said: “This was a great bonus point win; they were good in the contact area but the boys fronted up well now its on to Resolven in two weeks.”
