Strike your own coin at the Royal Mint

By GEM Staff Reporter in Business

The excitement is building as Britain prepares to celebrate an historic day when the new 12-sided £1 coin lands in the nation’s tills on March 28.

For a limited time only, those who can’t wait to get their hands on the shiny new bi-metallic coin can book a factory tour at the Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant and strike their own commemorative version before it enters circulation.

Its 12-sided shape, harking back to the ‘threepenny bit’, and floral design representing the nations of the United Kingdom, provide a sense of national pride and nostalgia, while its cutting edge security features establish it as Britain’s coin of the future.

When it is launched into everyday use at the end of March, it will pop up in people’s change alongside the current £1 coin until the ‘round pound’ is demonetised on October 15, 2017.
