Young performers aim to bring a classic musical to life in Porthcawl

Next week, the Bridgend Youth Theatre (BYT) will be performing the classic musical Fiddler on the Roof in the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl.

Last year’s choice of West Side Story was a great success, and many of the cast will be back again.

The award-winning musical, set in pre-revolutionary Russia, has as its main character Jewish milkman ‘Tevye’ played by long term member Owen Rhys Evans.

It’s Owen’s first lead role, and he is getting to grips with a larger-than-life character whose best-known number in the show is, of course, ‘If I Were a Rich man’.

Among Tevye’s worries is how to marry off three of his daughters, played by Olivia Hopper, Phoebe Lewis and Lucy Vinen. However, there is such depth in the BYT these days that this trio will alternate the roles with Elin Morris, Maddie Dawson and Jasmine Jones.

The Jewish community also has to contend with growing anti-Semitic sentiment threatening their village.

Roger Burnell, the artistic director of Bridgend Youth Theatre and director of Fiddler On The Roof, had this to say about the upcoming production.

“The cast have, yet again, been fully committed to the adventure. Their maturity and determination in rehearsals has been outstanding.

“We are sure you are in for an emotional yet enjoyable experience!’’

Now in its 18th year, BYT is an established BAFTA award-winning theatre company run in partnership with It’s My Shout Productions Ltd.

The show will be performed over three days, February 23, 24 and 25. The February 23 show (Thursday 7.30pm) will be an open dress rehearsal.

On Friday and Saturday (February 24, 25) there will be two shows on each day, at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.
